Printing Processes Blog
In this blog I am going to talk about the different printing processes. These different printing techniques are good skills to know because they are affordable and easy to use. These techniques could be used in any printing company or an artist who prints their own work.
In this process you use carving wood to print onto paper and you do that by toning wood and carving the picture by using carving tools. Then after the wood is finished you put ink in the wood and press it onto the paper
1) First you will choose the wood you want because the different grains will make different prints, get a flat piece of wood to work on.
2) You will use many types of wood carving tools, including U shaped and V shaped tools.
3) You will prepare your block by toning with Indian ink wash or wash of jet black film ink
4) After the wood is toned you can transfer you drawing through aid of iron oxide or carbon paper transfer by scarping the drawing on to the paper
5) Now the artist can choose what white line and black lines are reveled on the paper by scraping away the wood to make the white lines.
6) once your picture is done, you will press ink into the wood and print it on the paper
Intaglio process
In this process you use metal plate and carve the picture with the burin. There are lots of different acids and tools that you have to use to make sure the picture turns out as clear as it can be. The metal takes acid baths to make sure all the lines are clear and crisp. It takes awhile to do but the pictures are very beautiful.
1) warm the dry point etching on the hot metal sheet
2) ink the plate
3) use dried scrim to wipe off some of the ink
4) use the burin to draw the picture on the metal piece
5) put the metal in the acid bath to make sure the lines are clean and crisp
6) press ink into the metal then print onto a piece of paper
lithography process
In this process you will use a lithography stone to draw the picture onto and use grease and water to print the drawing. The artist draw with a greasy material on the stone. After the picture is drawn on the stone you will chemically treat the stone with gum abaric to establish where the water goes. Rosin and Talc are used for the etch that presses the drawing down into the stone. This process takes a while but it makes beautiful pictures.
1) get a lithography stone and you lithopencils to draw the picture into the stone
2) then you will do a first etch by putting on rosin and talc to press the image into the stone
3) then pour the gum arabic to the stone to establish the non image area
4) scrub into the stone until it has a ghost image on the stone
5) lastly you will cover the stone with lithotine
6) go over the stone with a damp towel
7) roll the ink into the stone and print onto the paper
If I were to choose on process to do I would do the wood relief process because I love carving wood and I feel like it is the most simple process to do. I also like the look of the pictures the wood carving makes because its imperfect but still is beautiful. I want to do Graphic Design for a living so I hope I can learn how to do it sometime.
